Homework for November 8
Today in class we looked at coherence in paragraphs and ways to achieve it. One of the ways to achieve coherence is using transition signals. Transition signals or transitions is a general term that refers to different kinds of words, expressions, and phrases that are used to show the connection between one idea and the next. In class, we took a brief look at when and how various types of transitions are used. To use transitions accurately, one needs a lot of practice. So, I'd like you to have sufficient practice with transitions. The exercises you have to do at home aim at developing your ability to recognize and use transition signals appropriately.
1. Do Practice 6 and 7 (A, B and C) from the handout given in class.
2. Do exercise Practicing Organization and Transitions on p. 43 in the textbook.
a) Choose one of the methods of organization (time order, spatial order or order of importance)
and make a list according to the order chosen.
b) Write a paragraph based on your list.
c) Go to ADDITIONAL MATERIALS (you can see it on the top of the blog beside HOME)
and access Self-Editing Worksheet: Paragraph Structure. Use the worksheet to check
your paragraph before posting it on the blog.
d) Post your paragraph on your group blog. (Sign with your first name and the first letter of
your last name; for example, Arina B. Please make sure that the language used in your blogs
is English, not Japanese.)
d) IMPORTANT! Go to ADDITIONAL MATERIALS to access a link to read about clauses.
